The Bible: We
believe and have
experienced that the Bible is the true Word of God which is the norm
for our faith and life the true standard by which teachings and
doctrines are to be judged. The Bible’s reliability lies not in
reading it as science or proscription, but as humankind’s chief
witness to God, reflecting on faith as it is to be lived.
Jesus as Christ: We
believe that Jesus
Christ suffered and died on the cross for the sins of all who believe.
Although humanity is separated from God because of sin, by faith in
Jesus Christ, forgiveness of sin is possible for all people. Through
Christ’s death we are freed from the bondage of sin and death to
live as free children of God. (Romans 8:2)
Salvation: We
believe and completely
rely on the "amazing grace" of God to save us from eternal death and
give us an eternal home with Him. Through our faith in God’s
grace we are saved, not by our works or actions, but only by the ever
enduring mercy of Christ do our souls find comfort and rest. (Ephesians
2:8-10)
The Church: We
believe that we are all
created in the image of God, have been blessed uniquely as children of
God, and that every human being has infinite worth and value. Just as
our gifts are unique, so are the many parts of the body of Christ, the
Church, to which we belong through baptism. (Genesis 1:27, 1
Corinthians 12:12)
Called to Serve: We
believe that
through the waters of baptism and the blood and body of the Eucharist
(the sacraments) we are called to serve others in need. As the bearers
of Christ’s love, we, as Christians, are called to show others
that love which has been given to us. We do this by: standing with
those in need; praying with and for the sick and distraught; walking
together. Friendship is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
